Months ahead I obsessed over which shoes to buy. It had to be the perfect shoe for the five day hike through the Liberian jungle.
My backpack was huge and heavy, with a tent, sleeping bag, sprays, cooking utensils, layers of clothes, food, etc. - I had it all.
"Are you going like that?", I asked a girl in flip flops and a miniskirt in utter shock and disbelief. She had nothing. Virtually nothing.
I got blisters the size of my heel, which got infected and could no longer move on with the others. Wrong shoes, ridiculous heavy backpack.
The people of the first village were beyond poor - no electricity, no functioning well, leaky roofs but big smiles, wonderful hearts, giving and sharing the next to nothing they had with the "special" guests. I stayed with them overwhelmed by hospitality.
On the way back they carried my heavy backpack, with all the stuff I never needed, on their head as I limped along in flip flops. I was embarrassed and touched by kindness.
why am I telling you this?
Nobody is perfect, I'm certainly not but that's irrelevant. I believe there is no failure, only learning, growing, mastering.
Life showed me right there and then that my gift of brilliant planning had a downside because my fear of lack was getting the best of me.
Limiting beliefs keep us from where we want to go. I became a coach to help others save months, years, even decades of slow and painful learning so that they can enjoy life in what seemed out of reach or even impossible.
